Rumen Degradation Characteristics of Elephant Grass,Alfalfa and Distiller's Grains in Dairy Buffaloes by Nylon Bag Method
This experiment was conducted to study the nutritional components and degradation characteristics of elephant grass, alfalfa and distiller's grains in buffalo rumen. The rumen conventional nutritional components and degradation parameters of dry matter(DM),crude protein(CP),neutral detergent fiber(NDF)and acid detergent fiber(ADF)of the three roughages were determined by nylon bag method. The results showed that the CP content of distiller's grains was significantly higher than that of the other two roughages(P<0.05).The CP contents of distiller's grains>alfalfa>elephant grass was in the order from high to low.The NDF con-tents of alfalfa and distiller's grains were significantly lower than those of elephant grass(P<0.05).The ADF content of alfalfa was significantly lower than that of elephant grass and distiller's grains(P<0.05).The DM effective degradation rates of elephant grass, alfalfa and distiller's grains were followed by 47.24%,53.52%and 47.95%,The effective degradation rates of CP were followed by 33.33%,66.04%,and 49.13%.The ef-fective degradation rates of DM,CP and ADF of alfalfa were the highest. The effective degradation rates of DM and CP from high to low were alfalfa>distiller's grains>elephant grass. The NDF effective degradation rates of elephant grass, alfalfa and distiller's grains were followed by 41.37%,33.24%and 18.35%,from high to low,the order were elephant grass>alfalfa>distiller's grains. The ADF effective degradation rates of el-ephant grass, alfalfa and distiller's grains were followed by 33.55%,37.70%and 24.11%,from high to low,the order were alfalfa>elephant grass>distiller's grains from high to low.In conclusion, alfalfa has high feed-ing value and can be used as a source of high-quality roughage for buffaloes. The distiller's grains can be used as CP supplement for buffaloes because of its high CP content and rumen effective degradation rate.Elephant grass can meet the needs of buffaloes for fiber feed by matching with other high-quality roughage.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2024,36(7):4716-4724]
