Effects of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus reuteri on Growth Performance,Intestinal Function and Cecal Microbiota of Suckling Piglets
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacil-lus reuteri on growth performance, intestinal function and cecal microbiota of suckling piglets.Twelve litters(8 piglets per litter)of 1-day-old healthy"Landrace×Rongchang"suckling piglets(the parity and expected date of delivery of sows were similar)were randomly divided into 4 groups with 3 litters per group.Piglets in the control group(CON group)were fed 2 mL 0.1%peptone solution per head every day,and those in Lacto-bacillus plantarum group(LP group),Lactobacillus reuteri group(LR group)and combined supplementation group(PR group)were supplemented with 1.0×10 10 CFU Lactobacillus plantarum,1.0×10 10 CFU Lactobacil-lus reuteri and 1.0×10 10 CFU Lactobacillus plantarum+1.0×10 10 CFU Lactobacillus reuteri dissolved in 2 mL 0.1%peptone solution per head every day, respectively.Piglets were suckled by their own sows, and sows in each group were fed the same diet. The experiment lasted for 10 days. After the experiment, the average daily gain and diarrhea rate of piglets were calculated.Six piglets from each group were slaughtered and sampled to determine intestinal morphology, tight junction protein gene expression and cecal microbiota. The results showed as follows:1)compared with CON group, the final weight and average daily gain of piglets in PR group were significantly increased(P<0.05),and the diarrhea rate in LP,LR and PR groups was significantly decreased(P<0.05).2)Compared with CON group, the villus height and ratio of villus height to crypt depth in ileum of piglets in LP,LR and PR groups were significantly increased(P<0.05).3)Compared with CON group, the relative mRNA expression levels of zonula occludens-1(ZO-1)in jejunum and claudin-1 in ileum of piglets in LP group were significantly increased(P<0.05),the occludin mRNA expression level in jejunum in LR group was significantly increased(P<0.05),and the mRNA expression levels of occludin and claudin-1 in jejunum as well as occludin,claudin-1 and ZO-1 in ileum in PR group were significantly increased(P<0.05).4)Compared with CON group, the Ace index and Chao1 index in cecal microbiota of piglets in LP,LR and PR groups were significantly increased(P<0.05),the Bacteroides relative abundance in cecum was significantly decreased(P<0.05),and the unclassified_Prevotellaceae relative abundance in cecum was signif-icantly increased(P<0.05);the Lactobacillus relative abundance in cecum in LP and PR groups was signifi-cantly increased(P<0.05).In conclusion,Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus reuteri can improve the intestinal morphology, increase intestinal tight junction protein expression, regulate intestinal microbiota struc-ture of suckling piglets, thus promoting their intestine health and reducing diarrhea rate, and the combined effect of the two-strain probiotics is better than that of single-strain probiotics.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nu-trition,2024,36(12):7658-7668]
