Effects of Dietary Fish Oil Supplementation on Fatty Acid Composition in Plasma and Erythrocyte Membrane,Exercise Physiological Parameters and Antioxidative Indexes of Police German Shepherd Dogs
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary fish oil supplementation on fatty acid composition in plasma and erythrocyte membrane, exercise physiological parameters and antioxidative indexes of police German shepherd dogs.Thirty police German shepherd dogs in training were randomly divided into two groups:control group(CK group)and fish oil supplementation group(FO group). On the basis of feeding com-mercial dog diet twice a day, dogs in the FO group were supplemented with 54 mg/kg BW0.75 fish oil once a day,and fish oil were added to the dog diet in capsule form. The experiment lasted for 12 weeks, during which the dogs underwent normal daily training.Treadmill exercise and venous blood collection were arranged at weeks 0,6 and 12.The changes of heart rate(HR),rectal temperature(RT)and thigh circumference(TC)were measured before and after treadmill exercise.Blood samples were used to measure the fatty acid composition in plasma and erythro-cyte membrane, the activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD),glutathione peroxidase(GPx)and catalase(CAT)in erythrocyte and the content of malondialdehyde(MDA)in plasma of dogs. The results showed that after 6 weeks of fish oil supplementation, compared with the CK group, the content of ∑n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids(∑n-3 PUFA)in plasma and erythrocyte membrane was extremely significantly increased(P<0.01),while the content of ∑n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids(∑n-6 PUFA)and the ratio of ∑n-6 PUFA/∑n-3 PUFA in plasma and erythrocyte membrane of FO group were extremely significantly decreased(P<0.01).After 12 weeks of fish oil supplementation, the differences of the above indices between FO and CK groups were further significant. After 6 weeks of fish oil supplementation, compared with the CK group, the thigh circumference extremely significantly increased(P<0.01),and the heart rate before and after exercise extremely significantly decreased of FO group(P<0.01);moreover,the rectal temperature after exercise of FO group was 0.2 ℃ lower than that of CG group(P<0.01).In terms of antioxidative indexes, the CAT activity in erythrocyte was extremely significantly increased after 6 weeks of fish oil supplementation of the FO group compared with the CK group(P<0.01);the activities of GPx and CAT activities were extremely significantly increased(P<0.0l),and plasma MDA content was extremely sig-nificantly decreased after 12 weeks of fish oil supplementation of the FO group compared with the CK group(P<0.01).The results indicate that dietary supplementation of fish oil can increase the content of ∑n-3 PUFA in plas-ma and erythrocyte membrane of police German shepherd dogs;fish oil supplementation for 6 weeks can effectively improve the exercise physiological parameters of police German shepherd dogs, and can improve the exercise per-formance;fish oil supplementation for 6 weeks can effectively improve the oxidation stress state of the body of po-lice German shepherd dogs, and play a positive role in promoting the exercise state.[Chinese Journal of Animal Nutrition,2024,36(12):7975-7985]
