Systems Theory,Phenomenology and Interdisciplinary Research:A Conversation with Cambridge Scholar Steven Watson
The global academic community is increasingly focusing on interdisciplinary approaches in university education and research, gradually surpassing the confines of traditional disciplines. This paper integrates Luhmann's social system theory and phenomenology to analyze cognition, social systems, and disciplinary relations, and provides a robust methodology for multidisciplinary intersection and interdisciplinary research.Social systems theory redefines disciplines as interrelated subsystems that provide a framework for multidisciplinary intersection and interdisciplinarity, while phenomenology focuses on subjectivity and provides an open research path for researchers to understand complex systems. The theories fit together to provide a comprehensive understanding of interdisciplinary research. However, interdisciplinary development faces challenges from changes in the academic environment, including cultivating a common spirit of knowledge generation, creating an environment for innovative solutions, and dealing with institutional issues of disciplinary boundaries and academic reward systems.Despite these challenges, the paper emphasizes the potential of this approach in confronting 21st-century challenges, advocating for further in-depth research and development. This integrative methodology presents a novel approach to understand complex real-world issues, gradually blur disciplinary boundaries, and provides intriguing opportunities for the academic community and researchers to explore unknown territories.
