Quantitative Research Paradigm in Education:Values,Dilemmas, and Innovative Paths
The paradigm of quantitative education research is based on positivism, using mathematical tools or statistical analysis to measure educational phenomena or educational processes, testing theoretical hypotheses based on data, and revealing the correlation among various factors in educational phenomena. The quantitative research paradigm in education is the key to improving the scientific nature of educational research,a tool to lead the high-quality development of education, and the need to adapt to the digital transformation of education. However, current quantitative research in education faces multiple dilemmas in promoting pedagogy to be scientific and empirical, manifested as the endogenous problem of methods, the prerequisite problem of quantification, and the normative problem of research. The transformation of the empirical research paradigm of educational research in China, the rapid development of information technology, and the formation of data sharing and disclosure mechanisms have provided realistic possibilities for the innovation of quantitative research paradigms. In the future, the educational quantitative research paradigm should be transformed and innovated in multiple dimensions, promote replicative research, develop computational pedagogy, and strengthen educational prediction research.
