Higher Education Promoting Regional Coordinated Development:Influencing Mechanisms and Empirical Evidence
Higher education provides a new driving force for promoting coordinated regional development.Based on the internal mechanism of higher education affecting regional coordinated development, the panel data of 31 provinces in China from 2010 to 2021 are used to empirically test the impact of higher education on regional coordinated development. It is found that higher education plays a significant role in promoting regional coordinated development, and this conclusion has passed a series of robustness tests. The promotion of coordinated regional development is primarily facilitated by higher education through three main channels:enhancing the skill level of the labor force, fostering capabilities for technological innovation, and encouraging the accumulation of cultural capital.Higher education has a significant spatialspillover effect, which can not only promote the coordinated development of the region, but also improve the coordinated development level of neighboring regions, and the role of inter-region is stronger than that of intra-region.Heterogeneity analysis shows that the promotion effect of higher education on regional coordinated development mainly exists in the east and middle regions. In order to give full play to the driving effect of higher education, efforts should be made to improve the development level of higher education, strengthen the transmission effect of higher education affecting the coordinated development of regions, and pay attention to the effective play of the spatial spillover effect of higher education.
