The Pattern Innovation and Governance Mechanism of Matrix Interdisciplinary Research Organizations in World-Class Research Universities
To fully integrate single disciplinary organizations,world-class research universities have established matrix interdisciplinary research organizations and innovated their pattern. They follow the pathways of "intra-university collaboration" and "inter-university collaboration" and generate two types of intra-university matrix and inter-university matrix interdisciplinary research organizations. Among them,the intra-university matrix includes "the college-college" matrix and "university level research institution-college" matrix. The horizontal and vertical organizational structure characteristics of matrix interdisciplinary research organizations determine that a complete governance mechanism is indispensable,involving four dimensions:governance goals guided by interdisciplinary integration and collaborative innovation,governance structure of cross-disciplinary and cross-border co-governance,governance methods of consultation by multiple stakeholders,and "three-in-one" institutional guarantees. Based on this,research universities in China should focus on promoting the construction of diversified matrix interdisciplinary research organizations,allowing multiple subjects to participate in governance,optimizing governance methods,and improving the institutional guarantee system.
