A Preliminary Discussion on the Reform of the College System of Modern Universities:The School Running Experience of Academies in the Song Dynasty
The academies in the Song Dynasty contained the core of moral education:"teaching to restore nature." They took the cultivation of talents with moral integrity and ability and practical application as their mission, focused on the long-term value of education, and,to a certain extent, avoided the practical drawbacks of traditional official schools where students were educated for fame. The academies in the Song Dynasty provides a beneficial experience for the reform of the college system of modern universities in terms of overall institutional goals, course teaching content, teaching organization form, and school support conditions. At present, the construction of the college system of modern universities in China is in a critical period of deepening reform, transformation, and development, and it is also in an essential stage of integrating theory and practice. Some university colleges have realistic problems such as vague positioning, loose goals, lack of interaction, and insufficient environmental support, which hinder the actual realization of these academies' educational functions and moral values. Drawing on the school-running experience of academies in the Song Dynasty will help us grasp the core of moral education in ancient academy education and clarify that modern university academies must adhere to the goal of running a school by "establishing morality and cultivating people" as the fundamental task, flexibly expand the teaching content, level and form of university academies, and fully support the creation of a university academy environment to ensure the educational effect of university academies and promote the in-depth development of the university academy system reform.
