Rice Paddy Library:The Practice and Innovation of the Rural Library in Tanjiawan,Wuzhen,Zhejiang Province:A Case Study Based on the Theory of Genius Loci
The Rice Paddy Library integrates the traditional rice paddy scenery with modern library concepts,expanding the functional role of the library as a physical space.Grounded in the theory of genius loci,this article takes the Tanjiawan Rice Paddy Library in Wuzhen,Zhejiang Province as a case study,providing an in-depth analysis of its multifaceted practices and exploring its implications for library development in the new era.The study finds that the Tanjiawan Rice Paddy Library,established in 2021,is located away from urban bustle,returning to the rural context.Its architectural form draws inspiration from traditional construction techniques,achieving a fusion of modernity and rusticity.The interior space emphasizes openness and sharing,creating a rural"public living room."The environmental imagery pursues tranquility,elegance,and poetic dwelling,constructing a serene spiritual space.Through a sense of place,place identity,place attachment,and place bonding,the Tanjiawan Rice Paddy Library achieves an organic unity of readers,library buildings,culture,and nature.Its successful practices offer multifaceted insights for the transformative development of rural book houses in China,including cultural resonance in site selection,personalized architectural expression,open and integrated spatial layouts,and the creation of a multi-dimensional elegant environment.This provides a case study experience for the development of new rural libraries.
