On the purpose of interpretation:One of the fundamental issues in Chinese literary hermeneutics
Only humans can interpret, because only humans live in a world of meaning, and meaning cannot be separated from language and interpretation. So why do people need to interpret?Traditional hermeneutics mostly believes that inter-pretation is to discover the author's intention, while modern hermeneutics believes that interpretation is a way of hu-man existence. This is obviously not discussing the issue on the same level. However, both of these hermeneutics have a common point, which is that they do not attach much importance to the important, even decisive, significance of the"purpose of interpretation"for the act of interpretation and the entire process of interpretation.Traditional hermeneu-tics focuses on the psychological experience of the interpreter rather than the impact of the interpretive purpose on the interpretive behavior, while philosophical hermeneutics emphasizes the important role of the interpreter's foresight(prejudice)in the act of interpretation, but also ignores the importance of the purpose of interpretation. In fact, when facing the object of interpretation, the interpreter always approaches and discovers the meaning of a certain level from a certain perspective, and no one can fully understand the object of interpretation. The reason why the interpreter chooses this rather than that perspective to approach is certainly influenced by their foresight(prejudice),but it is al-so significantly influenced by the purpose of the interpretation.Foresight(prejudice)and the purpose of interpreta-tion,one overt and one covert, jointly determine the direction and outcome of the interpretation process.
