Xunzi's study of gentlemen from the perspective of Confucian theory of the human being
Xunzi elaborated on a series of issues such as the connotation,composition,form,characteristics,representation,sta-tus,criteria,realm,emotion,and effort of a gentleman.Xunzi proposed two core concepts,the study of gentlemen and the way of gentlemen,which permeated his thoughts and systematically constructed the study of gentlemen.In terms of the essence of a gentleman,the meaning of a gentleman in Xunzi's words includes three aspects.As a versatile and knowledgeable gentleman,a gentleman with a certain status,and a gentleman with noble morality.In terms of the mor-al character of a gentleman,Xunzi mainly endows gentleman with five connotations:advocating justice,fairness,loving others,moderation,and sincerity.In terms of the value pursuit of gentlemen,Xunzi highlights the moral value pursuit of gentlemen with goodness as a symbol,and strongly advocates for gentlemen to uphold the Tao,accumulate good-ness,and argue.In terms of the status and role of a gentleman,Xunzi roughly explains it from two aspects:the gentle-man governing various things and the gentleman managing heaven and earth.In terms of the self-cultivation of a gen-tleman,Xunzi focused on elucidating two cultivation methods:learning and self-cultivation.
