The history of changes in the writing of the Lao People in the Tang Dynasty
In the Tang Dynasty,"Lao"had three connotations:the general name of"Lao"of races, the"slave"of social class and the"southerner"of regional discrimination. The diversity of the concept of"Lao"indicates that"Lao",originally known as a non Chinese nationality, has derived discriminatory terms of Chinese class and region, and"Lao"was changing from the external ethnic classification of China to the internal population clas-sification.With the advancement of the Sinicization of the South, the Lao people, who generally refers to non Chinese ethnic groups in Bashu since the Northern and Southern Dynasties, differentiated into the special name of Lao in the Tang Dynasty. At the same time, the boundary between the Lao people in Bashu and other ethnic groups became clear. On the contrary, the boundary of the Lao people in Lingnan expanded rapidly,"Lao"replaced"Li"and became the general name of non Chinese ethnic groups in Lingnan in the Tang Dynasty.Because the Sinicization of the Li people preceded the Lao people in Lingnan, the ethnic meaning of"Li"in the Tang Dynasty decreased, and the tendency as an internal class and cultural reference in China became increasingly prominent. The process is similar to the evolution of the concept of"Lao".Compared with the the-ory of"objective entity",observing the complex national phenomena and national relations in the middle ancient south from the perspective of"ethnic concept"may be closer to the cognition of people at that time.
