Based on Russian biographical films(biopics)of the period 1991-2020,the article examines the problem of a real historical character that the cinema can offer to the audience and society as a"national hero"—a person who embodies the values and guidelines of the state cultural policy and national ideology.By analysing the most representative biopics of the period,the author not only traces the evolution of the image of the national hero in Russian cinema of the last thirty years,but also draws conclusions about the importance of the moral and ethical component in his image.
