As the high-profile representatives of modernist literary theory in the first half of the 20th century,Wellek and Russian formalists made general reforms and broke new ground in their respective academic circles.Wellek's unique research experience gave him a natural closeness towards formalists.In the process of evaluating literary criticism schools and constructing a system of literary theory,Wellek mentioned Russian Formalism many times and held in-depth discussions.Literariness,literary history and conception of artistic unity constituted the main topics of the poetic dialogue between the two,and reflected the parallel similarities between different schools.In the process of analyzing the core content of the above topics—the essence of literature,the evolvement mechanism of literature,the mode of existence of literary works,Wellek was not only inspired by the literary theory of Russian formalism,but also revised and deepened the immature views therein,and achieved a substantial expansion of the inherent research vision of formalism.
