The Construction of Eurasian Nation-States from the Perspective of Modernization Theory
From the perspective of modernization theory, this article makes a comprehensive study on the achievements and problems of 11 newly independent Eurasian countries in choosing the development path after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. The development process of these countries are similar with each other some extent. They have close political, economic, historical and cultural ties with each other, but also experienced division, conflict and even wars with each other, forming a unique geopolitical and geo-economic space.Over the past 30 years since their independence, these countries have made great and obvious differences in economic strength and political system, but the problems they face are still similar, especially the process of moving towards a modern nation-state is very tortuous. This article focuses on the problems they face in different stages of political and economic transformation, and holds that the most priority task of Eurasian countries in the choice of modernization model is to consolidate the independence and sovereignty of nation-states.They not only value the improvement of governance capacity and the strengthening of power legitimacy, but also hope to receive recognition from the international community as soon as possible, especially from major powers, which has caused some contradictory phenomena.Their modernization process exhibits atypical and contradictory characteristics, resulting in a real conflict between"modernization"and"traditionalization","modernity"and"traditionalism".For the newly independent Eurasian countries born in the space of the post-Soviet Union, the construction of their modem nation-state has special characteristics, that is,national independence comes first and nation-building comes second, making it difficult to synchronize. They need to address five urgent issues:national identity, political legitimacy, policy unity, public participation, and wealth distribution.
