The Characteristics of the Dual Academic Network of Academic Returnees in China's"Double First-class"Universities
Using the survey of faculty in China's"double first-class"universities,based on proximity theory and social network theory, this paper examines the role of overseas mobility experience in building academic network by analyzing the characteristics of overseas and domestic academic networks of returnee faculty. It is found that overseas mobility has the opposite effects on returnees'overseas academic network and domestic academic network.Overseas mobility experience significantly optimizes the scale, interaction depth, and top level of returnees'overseas academic network, but significantly reduces the interaction depth of their domestic academic network.Different types of overseas mobility experience have different effects on academic network construction.Overseas PhD/working mobility has the biggest effect on optimizing the overseas academic network and the weakening of the domestic academic network, followed by overseas doctoral study and overseas working mobility. There are significant differences in the characteristics of the dual academic network among returnee faculty at different stages of return to China. As time goes by,the advantages of overseas academic network of returnee faculty gradually decline, while the disadvantages of domestic academic network are repaired.Chinese universities should make full use of the advantages of the transnational social capital of returnee faculty to improve the international level of Chinese higher education, and assist them to integrate into the domestic academic circle as early as possible.
