"Imagination on Mobility"and"Practice of Mobility"——A Qualitative Study on Foreign Academics at a New-Model Research University in China
This paper explores the motivations and lived experiences of international academics working in China, based on a qualitative interview study at a new-model research university. It is found that there is both a correlation and a gap between the"imagination on mobility"and the"practice of mobility"of foreign academics in China. In terms of motivations, career prosperity, gaining Chinese experience, cultural exposure, and the attractiveness of a new institution are major factors that influence international academics'decisions to work in China. The contextualized"practice of mobility"embodies the complex interactions between the subject and the structure.Foreign academics encounter various situations similar to or different from their original professional habitus and the work field in their home country, and these subjective perceptions will affect their job satisfaction and further mobility decisions. This study has implications for improving Chinese universities'policies for international talents to create an academic ecological environment that attracts global talents. It also contributes to enriching the literature on foreign academics and transnational academic mobility.
