摘要
在清末民初的译书、辞书出版热潮中,《迈尔通史》《世界名人传略》是两部精品译作,至今仍为研究者所关注.商务版《汉英辞典》则是首部由国人自编并在国内出版的汉译英辞典,并持续热销二十余年.张在新作为这两部译作的主要译述者以及辞典的编纂者,其生平与文化活动却鲜为后人所知.本文试图将张在新的编译生涯置于其成长的家庭、教育背景以及清末民初的历史巨变中去考察,以揭示上海本土知识人在西学传播热潮中所扮演的角色与贡献.
Abstract
Amidst the fervor of book translation and dictionary publication during the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,A General History for Colleges and High-Schools by Myers and One Thousand Biographies Selected from Chambers Biographical Dictionary stood out as two high-quality translated works that continue to attract scholarly attention to this day.The Chinese-English Dictionary published by the Commercial Press marked the first Chinese-translated English dictionary compiled by Chinese and domestically published,enjoying consistent popularity for over two decades.While Zhang Zaixin,as the principal compiler of these two translations and editor of the dictionary,remains obscure in terms of his life and cultural activities.This paper seeks to contextualize Zhang Zaixin's editing and translation career within the backdrop of his upbringing,educational background,and the significant historical changes of the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,thereby illuminating the role and contributions of indigenous intellectuals in Shanghai during the fervent spread of Western learning.
