Yao Mingda,a young scholar,initially studied under the guidance of Liang Qichao at the Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Studies,focusing on the research of Zhang Xuecheng.Despite achieving significant progress in a short span,he consistently voiced critiques of Hu Shi's prior studies on Zhang Xuecheng.Subsequently,in a bid to secure Hu Shi's endorsement,the eager Yao Mingda found himself compelled to align with the latter's perspectives,aiding in the revision of"Mr.Zhang Shizhai's Chronicle."The ensuing dynamic between the two parties,revolving around their engagement with Zhang Xuecheng,vividly portrays Yao Mingda's scholarly demeanor,the interplay between his academic inclinations and the broader contextual factors,and the unfolding of the academic history and advancements within the Zhang Xuecheng research wave during the early Republic of China.
