Songs and Poetry of Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty and the Music System of Han Yuefu
Emperor Wu of Han was enthusiastic about poetry creation. His representative work Qiufeng Ci(Song of the Autumn Wind)adopts the style of Chu Ci(the Chu Rhetoric)and uses Chu music and the"Xi"-construction.Through the strong melody and Xianghe Song style,it portrays an image of a heroic overlord who is ambitious and sentimental, which lays down the Han Yuefu's(Folk Music in the Han Dynasty)aesthetic orientation of being vigorous and solemn.Emperor Wu appointed Li Yannian to take charge of music affairs, reviving the Han Yuefu and greatly expanding its functions. The Han Yuefu collected a large amount of folk music and Hu music(Central Asian music),perfected 17 Zongmiao song"An Shi Fang Zhong Ge,"produced 19"Jiao Si Ge,"and 28"Heng Chui Qu."The Han Yuefu achieved a transformation from Yayue(ceremonial music)of Zhou and Qin Dynasties to the music of Han Dynasty, which had a profound impact on the development of Qingshangyue in later generations.
