Literature and Academic Research on the Yuan Family in the Tang Dynasty
As a royal family, the Yuan family was the largest family in the Northern Dynasties.By the Tang Dynasty, even though it had become an ordinary family, its former royal status and the family cultural traditions accumulated since the Northern Dynasties were still respected by the family. It is now known that there were about 80 scholars in the Yuan family in the Tang Dynasty, which was slightly lower than the approximately 94 in the Northern. This is related to the change in the family status and the improvement of the overall educational level of the family.Minor scholars were no longer recorded in historical biographies, epitaphs or other documents. The literary and academic achievement of the Yuan family scholars in the Tang Dynasty far exceeded that of the Northern Dynasties, and it witnessed the emergence of famous scholars such as Yuan Xisheng,Yuan Jie,Yuan Zhen, and Yuan Zongjian,as well as academic masters such as Yuan Xingchong and Yuan Wanqing. The Yuan scholars took part in the academic transformation of "non-compliance with rules" and "suspecting ancient history," and focused themselves on applying academic knowledge to governance. The exploration of the literature and scholarship of the family is an important part of the study of the Yuan family in the Tang Dynasty, and it is also helpful to examine the literati evolution of the Hu ethic.
