From Philosophical Transfers to Cultural Sociology of Mediation
The 19th century French philosophy is to a large extent a translation and reinterpretation of German philosophy (Cousin and his students).In the 20th century,many of the scholars who helped bring German philosophy to France made the same journey:from Russia they crossed the Germanic cultural space before arriving in Paris (Koyré,Kojève,Gurvitch).We also encounter surprising mediations,notably in the introduction of Husserl to France,linked to the Vietnamese philosopher Tran Duc Thao,author of a fundamental book on Phenomenology and Dialectical Materialism.The places of foreign memory that libraries constitute can serve as a starting point for dynamics of reinterpretation.But it is especially important for research on cultural transfers to focus on the role of mediators in the re-semantization of imported content.
