The Grand Canal gave birth to many famous cities to the south of the Yangtze River.Preserved in the architectural remains in these cities are many metaphorical decorative signs of residential buildings that highlight regional characteristics. These signs can represent the development of economic culture, social structure, and folk customs in different regions.Especially during the Ming and Qing dynasties, the decorative symbols of residential buildings were influenced by the political system, commodity economy, and culture of Confucianism,Buddhism, and Taoism, which standardised their order, increased their diversity, and enriched their semantic meaning.Images typically had an educational function and the fashion of residential decoration was widely popular among all social strata.Based on a field survey of the remains of modern residential buildings in Suzhou and Changzhou, this paper conducts a comparative study of the deep semiotic meaning behind their architectural decorative patterns and analyses the advantages and disadvantages of their spiritual inheritance, providing a reference for the contemporary rational understanding of excellent traditional culture and the spirit of craftsmanship.
