Study on Ornamental Characteristics and Adaptability of Five Camellia Species in Hangzhou Region
[Objective]To assess the ornamental value of various Camellia species and their adaptability to Hangzhou's unique climate,with the aim of promoting their use in landscaping and greening projects.[Method]Five Camellia species,including original species C.chekiangoleosa Hu'Zhejiang',C.japonica'Huafoding',C.reticulata'Valentine Day',C.sasanqua'Kanjirō'and C.azalea'Xiameng Wenqing',were used as materials.Their plant characteristics and ornamental qualities were compared,and their cold,heat,disease and insect resistances were investigated in Hangzhou.[Result]The ornamental analysis revealed that only C.azalea'Xiameng Wenqing'bloomed in summer with a longest flowering period of four and a half months,while the other four species bloomed in autumn,winter and spring.C.japonica'Huafoding'had distinctive anemone-type flower,whereas the rest had single or double petals.Resistance analysis indicated that C.sasanqua'Kanjirō'hadhighest cold resistance,C.azalea'Xiameng Wenqing'showed strong heat tolerance,and original species C.chekiangoleosa Hu had highest diseases and pests resistance.[Conclusion]All five Camellia species can be effectively applied in landscaping and greening projects in Hangzhou.
