Gap dynamic and their natural disturbance characteristics in mid-Fujian montane natural forest
Through field investigation of 7 gaps in Jianqi Mountain natural forest in Longkeng Village of Datian County, the gap characteristics and their natural disturbance characteristics in mid-Fujian montane natural forest were studied in this paper. Gaps in the natural forest are elliptic or nearly round in horizontal forms, the ratio of long axis to short axis for each gap is about 1.14. The area percentage of expanded gap( EG) and canopy gap( CG) in the forest landscape is 78. 61% and 27. 66% respectively. The natural disturbance frequency for EG and CG is 1. 572%·a-1 and 0. 552%·a-1 respectively, the return interval of canopy gaps is a-bout 180 a. The size of most EG in the tropical montane rain forest range from 300 m2 through 1 000 m2 , averaged about 560 m2. And the size of most CG in the forest range from 80 m2 through 400 m2, averaged about 200 m2. Most gaps were formed within 50 years, and most of which aged 10-50 a. Most gaps were made by 1-5 gap makers, of which 2-4 gap makers gaps are the majority. The dead gap makers were breaked at trunk base. Major gap makers are more than 10 tree species that are not only tree species in the first canopy layer, but also tree species in the second and third layers. Finally, based on the studies of gap dynamics, some suggestions were put forward to manage mid-Fujian montane natural forest.
