In order to deeply comprehend the performance of breeding parents selected from the superior provenance in the genetic improvement,the experimental forest of the half sib progeny of the first generation seed orchard of Pinus massoniana was researched,through analyzing the growth of families,breeding value,actual improved gain and selecting superior trees of the second generation,to evaluate the performance and value of the three superior provenances from Tongmian,Gupeng and Yunkai mountain in the traditional improvement ofP.massoniana in Guangxi.The results indicated that the average height was 15.99 m in 19-year-old family of the half sib progeny,average diameter at breast height (DBH) for 19.66 cm,average individual volume was 0.246 0 m3,which was 65.10% higher than local commodity species and 35.16% higher than Pinus elliottii.Compared with the superior provenance,it achieved significant improvement effect including 8.30% of actual improved gain of height,12.70% of actual improved gain of DBH,33.33% of the actual improved gain of volume.There were some differences between parents selected from different provenances in the progeny test,and each had its characteristics.The breeding value of provenances of Tongmian,Gupeng and Yunkai mountain were respectively:0.001 2,-0.000 8,0.001 1.The height growth increment of Gupeng was the highest with average diameter of 16.11 m,and the growth of DBH of Tongmian provenance was the largest with the average of 19.86 cm.There were 16 trees of the second generation,and 2,10,4 superior trees from Tongnian,Gupeng,Yunkai mountain respectively.The female parent from Yunkai mountain had more families and individuals that had a higher growth performance.The results also showed that the parents from Tongmian could obtain a higher actual improved gain than Tongmian mixed line on the tree height;the parents from Gupeng had a larger actual improved gain than Gupeng mixed line on DBH.
