In order to find the reason of leaf color mutation, the trial studied the content of photosynthetic pigment, level of chlorophyll synthesis precursor and microstructure and ultrastructure of different color leaves of Bambusa multiplex 'Silverstripe'. The results showed that: 1) there was a significant difference among the photosynthetic pigment content in different type leaves, and the content decreased with the decrease of green leaf area; 2) the reason for showing a white leaf was the chlorophyll biosynthesis block and the blocked points would be in the conversion process of Coprogen Ⅲ to Proto Ⅸ; 3) there was no significant different between the epidermis of 2 kinds leaves, whereas the content in the white mesophyll cells were absent; 4) compared with the intact chloroplast structure in green mesophyll cells, dysplastic chloroplasts could be observed in white one, including chloroplasts with swollen thylakoids and fragmented or no chloroplast membranes, and where the osmiophilic granules could be seen. This study preliminarily explained the reasons for the differences in the leaf color of B. multiplex 'Silverstripe', and laid the foundation for further research on the molecular mechanism.
