The Relationship Between Physical Exercise and Mental Flexibility in College Students:The Chain Mediating Effect of Perceived Social Support and Self-Esteem
Objective:To explore the effects of physical activity on mental flexibility of college students,and to ex-amine the interlocking mechanism between self-esteem and cognitive social support.Methods:Physical Activity Rating Scale(PARS),Cognitive Social Support Scale(CSSS),Self-esteem Scale(SELS)and Psychological Flexibility Scale(PFAS)were used to measure in 369 college students.SPSS 26.0 and AMOS v.23 software were used to test their mediating effects.Results:①Physical activity was positively correlated with mental flexibility(r=0.397,p<0.01);Physical exercise positively predicted college students'sense of social support(r=0.303,p<0.01)and self-esteem(r=0.510,p<0.01);Social support positively predicted self-esteem of college students(r=0.463,p<0.01).The mental resilience of college students was positively predicted(r=0.705,p<0.01).Self-esteem positively predicted mental resilience of college students(r=0.716,p<0.01).②Me-diation effects analyses indicate that perceived social support and self-esteem mediate the effects of physical activi-ty and psychological flexibility in college students,in which the individual mediating role of perceived social sup-port(95%CI:0.109,0.269)and self-esteem(95%CI:0.134,0.329)was significant,and there was a chain mediation effect between them(95%CI:0.033,0.081).Conclusion:The linkage relationship between social support value and self-esteem of college students plays a vital mediating role in the relationship between physical activity and mental flexibility.
