Effects of Virtual Reality Aerobic Exercise on Mood States of Subthreshold Depressed Female College Students
Objective:To investigate the effects of 8 weeks of virtual reality aerobic exercise on mood states of sub-threshold depressed(SD)female college students in order to provide evidence for a self-directed exercise inter-vention program for SD female college students. Methods:Subjects were recruited in the fall semester of 2023 at Shaanxi Normal University, and 75 female college students with SD were screened by the Depression Scale(CES-D),and were divided into a control group(n=25),a cycling group(n=25),and a VR cycling group(n=25)using a randomized numeric table method, and the intervention process lasted for 8 weeks, including the traditional cycling intervention and the VR cycling intervention;the control group did not undergo any kind of intervention.Domor heart rate equipment was used to monitor the intensity of exercise, and changes in the depression scale(CES-D),the state of mind scale(BFS),and the exercise-induced mood inventory(EFI)scores were ob-served in the three groups before and after the 6-week intervention. Results:After 8 weeks of intervention,CES-D scores were significantly lower in the VR riding group and cycling group compared to the control group(P<0.001),and the CES-D scores were significantly lower in the VR riding group compared to the cycling group(P<0.001);after 8 weeks of intervention, the VR riding group and the cycling group had significantly higher scores of activeness and pleasantness on the Battery of State of Mind Scale(BFS)compared to the control group(P<0.001),and the depression and inactivity scores were significantly lower(P<0.001),and the active and pleas-ure scores were significantly higher(P<0.05),and the depression scores were significantly lower(P=0.001),in the VR riding group compared to the cycling group;after 8 weeks of intervention, the VR cycling group had sig-nificantly higher scores on the Exercise Induced Mood Inventory(EFI)Energetic Arousal and Positive Engagement scores compared to the cycling group and the control group(P<0.05),and the Energetic Arousal scores in the cy-cling group compared to the control group(P=0.025).Conclusion:VR technology-assisted aerobic exercise ef-fectively alleviates depressive symptoms and improves the emotional state of SD female college students, suggesting that the integration of virtual reality technology and exercise intervention in the digital age can be used as an effec-tive means of depression improvement.
