The Dilemma and Breakthrough Path of Agricultural Product Trade across the Taiwan Strait
Under the influence of the Democratic Progressive Party's worsening cross-Strait relations,as well as the China-US trade friction, the COVID-19 and other factors, the economic and trade development environment across the Taiwan Strait has obviously turned negative in recent years, which has intensified the deep-seated structural contradictions accumulated in the cross-Strait agricultural trade for a long time, such as unequal market opening, limited trade depth, trade structure imbalance and so on.The turbulent trade environment and the suspension of institutionalized economic cooperation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have led to a structural oscillating decline in agricultural product trade, facing unprecedented development difficulties.Inthis regard, the most urgent and fundamental way is to eliminate the political interference of"Taiwan independence"activists, restart the cross-Strait interactive consultation, and improve the cross-Strait trade environment. At present,a more feasible approach should be to leverage functional communication platforms between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait to seek local breakthroughs. In the long run,we should explore the path of building a common market to correct market distortions, and promote the gradual return of cross-Strait agricultural product trade to the track of a market economy.
