Among Ferrying,Returning, and Staying:An Analysis of the Movements of Taiwan Scholar-Gentry Who Traveled to Chinese Mainland around the Cession of Taiwan in 1895
Around the cession of Taiwan in 1895,a large number of Taiwan gentry chose to ferry to the motherland due to their sense of nationalism and their identification with traditional Chinese culture and values, forming a special gentry group. However, affected by emotions, living conditions, property, and space for development, there were also some gentry who returned to Taiwan to settle down again.Even after returning to Taiwan, many of them persisted in spreading traditional Chinese studies under colonial oppression, contributing to the continuation of Chinese culture and national consciousness in Taiwan. At the same time, some Taiwan scholar-gentry decided to stay on the mainland. After settling down, they actively integrated into mainland society, pursued the value of their lives in various fields, promoted the development of local society, and played an important role in the social change of the mainland in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period.Whether they returned to Taiwan again or determinedly stayed in the mainland, these gentry identified strongly with the Chinese nation,as well as the inheritors and disseminators of traditional Chinese culture. To a certain extent, they have facilitated cross-Strait exchanges and promoted the development of traditional culture in Taiwan.
