In order to explore the out-of-plane dynamic response law of enclosing masonry wall outside cold storage un-der earthquake action, time history analysis of a 3-story cold storage model was conducted using ABAQUS software.Seismic wave was inputted in double propagation direction. The out-of-plane displacement characteristics, law of out-of-plane acceleration and its amplification coefficient distribution along the building height were analyzed. Moreover, the values of the equivalent lateral force method in Chinese code for seismic design of buildings were compared. The results showed that there is no damage in enclosing wall under small earthquake, minor damage in some wall centers under moderate earthquake and serious damage under maximum considered earthquake. It was revealed that the out-of-plane dynamic response of the enclosing wall is affected by factors including ground motion,inter-story displacement of the main structure, and stiffness of the anchor beam, etc.Significant dynamic amplification effects appeared for the en-closing wall. The seismic force calculated by the equivalent lateral force method in Chinese code results in a relatively small value. To ensure the functional use of the cold storage, measures for improving the seismic resistance of the en-closing masonry walls should be taken in engineering design.
