The instability of slope often occurs under the control of poor structural surface, especially the instability and failure of high and steep rock slopes. The tail section of the lower reservoir of a pumped storage power station is a high rock slope left over from the open mining mountain, which is only 45m away from the straight line distance of the end section of the proposed lower reservoir, which has huge potential safety hazards for the construction of the project. On the basis of obtaining the structural planes of rock slopes through manual measurement windows and 3D laser scan-ners,this article uses discrete element numerical simulation to analyze and evaluate the stability of high slopes left be-hind by mining in the tail section of a pumped storage power station. The results show that the slope mainly develops three structural planes:NE60°~70°/NW∠3°~7°,NE13°~70°/SE∠70°~87°and NW293°~330°/SW∠71°~90°.The failure of the surface rock mass of the slope is analyzed by the particle discrete element PFC2D,which is ba-sically stable under natural working conditions, poor or unstable under heavy rain and seismic conditions, and the col-lapse and falling blocks may occur in the depth range of 5 m~10 m,and the potential dangerous rock mass is esti-mated to be about 4.8×104 m3.
