The beauty of neutrality in Yan Shu's ci-poems can be explored from two aspects. The first is emotional expression:if not expressed,it is neutral and if expressed moderately,it is placid.Yan Shu often contained emo-tions in a timely manner before they reached their climax, and paused the thoughts in the final sentence, which is neat and restrained with endless aftertaste. The roundabout way of expressing the essence is achieved and the sense of restraint is mainly achieved through three ways:regulating emotions with reason, scenery and sentiment. The second is the choice of imagery.Yan's ci-poems often focus on the choice of flowing and opposing imagery. The former refers to things that are in a flowing state during the transition of seasons and are usually associated Yan Shu's keen perception of time and life, with the main representation of moderation;the latter refers to images that exhibit opposing relationships in the aesthetic realm. The opposition is not intense, but rather gentle and un-biased,constantly tending towards a state of neutrality. The construction of these two types of image groups pro-vides a smooth and harmonious expression space for the deep meaning of the poetry.
