Titles play a crucial role in improving the indexing,viewing,and citation rate of academic articles.The paper reports a study of the formal,content,functional and pragmatic features that help construct the informativeness and conciseness of 127 journal article titles collected in a snowballing way in the past 20 years.Findings indicate that researchers mostly focused on the formal and content features of titles,but neglected the studies of their functional and pragmatic features.It was also found that the current grouping of syntactic structures and functional features of titles are confusing,and their content features are seldom discussed in the Chinese literature.Suggestions are thus given on how to write and study academic titles in the future.
