Deconstruction of Mainstream Discourse and Historical Construction of Others:A New Historical Interpretation of Shanghai Girls
Chinese American writer Lisa See is dedicated to telling Chinese stories and disseminating Chinese voices. In Shanghai Girls,See partially restores the history and folk traditions of Chinese immigrants from the perspectives of personal history and folk narratives, depicting the dual spiritual and physical harm inflicted on Chinese Americans by war, racial discrimination, and unequal treaties, which aligns with the historical perspective of New Historicism.Analyzing this work from a New Historicism perspective, revisiting history that has been obscured, distorted,or forgotten by mainstream narratives, and challenging American mainstream ideologies and cultural hegemony can assist Chinese Americans who survive in the crevice of dual cultures in reflecting on cultural conflicts and racial discrimination, enabling subsequent generations of Chinese Americans to better reshape historical consciousness and construct their subjective identities.Simultaneously,it provides a reference for other ethnic minorities to explore and excavate obscured or marginalized racial histories through storytelling.
