Artistic Characteristics and Cultural Implications of Huizhou Ancestral Portraits from the Perspective of Iconology
Huizhou ancestral portraits,a type of traditional Chinese portraiture,exhibit a high degree of realism,reflecting the concepts,abilities,and general modeling methods of ancient Chinese art in portraiture during and after the Ming Dynasty.Nurtured by the humanistic and geographical environment of Huizhou,the ancestral portraits flourished and developed unprecedentedly during the Ming and Qing dynasties.Artists crafted solemn and elegant images of the portrait subjects through stylized painting techniques,establishing unique artistic characteristics through decorative colors and elegant patterns.The clans in Huizhou prayed for the spiritual intervention and blessings of their ancestors by hanging ancestral portraits and bowing to them,thereby demonstrating their aristocratic status and presenting traditional filial piety ethics with sincerity,reverence,and prudence.This is a unique folk custom culture in Huizhou,embodying the simple folk beliefs of the Huizhou people.
