An inorganic thick coating with excellent performance was prepared by using magnesium-potassium phosphate cement in the fireproof coating for steel structure. The effect of phosphorus to magnesium ratio(P/M)on the compressive strength, bond strength and fire resistance of the magnesi-um-potassium phosphate cement fireproof coatings for steel structure(MFCS)was explored, whose mechanism was revealed by microscopic tests. The results show that with the decrease of P/M,the compressive strength, the bond strength and fire resistance of MFCS increase first and then decrease. When P/M is1/3,the amount of hydration product MgKPO4·6H2 O is the largest, and the most heat can be absorbed by MFCS under the condition of raised temperature, and therefore the fire resistance is the best.Meanwhile, the interfacial transition zone between hardened cement paste and aggregate is the densest, resulting in the best compressive strength and bond strength.
