Correlation of serum serotonin/dopamine ratio with postpartum depression and severity of the disease
Objective To explore the correlation between serum 5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT)/do-pamine(DA)ratio and postpartum depression(PPD)and disease severity. Methods 106 clinically diag-nosed postpartum women with PPD admitted to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Air Force Medical University from January 2020 to December 2023 were selected as the depression group, and 100 healthy pregnant women during the same period were selected as the control group. The levels of 5-HT and DA in serum of both groups were detected, and the 5-HT/DA ratio was calculated. All postpartum women were evaluated for depression us-ing the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale(EPDS)and Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS).Pearson corre-lation analysis was used to explore the relationship between serum 5-HT,DA levels, and 5-HT/DA ratio, and EPDS scores. The Receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves were used to analyze the value of serum 5-HT,DA levels, and 5-HT/DA ratio in evaluating the occurrence of PPD.Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of PPD occurrence. Results The serum levels of 5-HT and DA in the depression group were lower than those in the control group, and the 5-HT/DA ratio was higher than that in the control group, with statistically significant differences(P<0.05).The EPDS and SDS scores in the depression group were higher than those in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).There is a negative correlation between serum 5-HT,DA,and EPDS score in patients with PPD depression, and a positive correlation between 5-HT/DA ratio and EPDS score(P<0.05).The AUC values of serum 5-HT,DA,and 5-HT/DA ratio for assessing postpartum depression were 0.827,0.762,and 0.941,respec-tively.The hs CRP levels in the depression group were higher than those in the control group, while the TC and HDL-C levels were lower than those in the control group, and the differences were statistically significant(P<0.05).Multivariate analysis showed that hs CRP,TC,HDL-C,5-HT,DA,and 5-HT/DA ratio were the influencing factors of postpartum depression in mothers(P<0.05).Conclusion The 5-HT/DA ratio is signifi-cantly higher in postpartum women with PPD and is positively correlated with the severity of depressive symp-toms.This ratio of 5-HT/DA is expected to serve as a potential biomarker for assessing the occurrence of PPD.
