Digital Economy,Innovation Gap and Center-Periphery Economic Gap:Perspective of New Economic Geography
Using the new economic geography model and based on the spatial knowledge spillover effect of the digital economy, the reshaping mechanism of the digital economy on the economic geography pattern was deduced. This model shows that the digital economy reshapes the regional economic spatial structure by changing the urban innovation gap.At the same time, using panel data of 237 prefecture-level cities in China from 2005 to 2022,a time and regional dual fixed effect model was used for empirical testing. The results show that the digital economy helps narrow the economic gap between peripheral cities and corresponding central cities. The mechanism test reveals that the digital economy significantly reduces the urban innovation gap, which is conducive to narrowing the economic gap between the center and peripheral cities. In addition, heterogeneity analysis shows that the greater the geographical distance between peripheral cities and the corresponding central city, the greater the role of digital economic development in narrowing the economic gap between them and the central city.Based on the research conclusions, policy recommendations are put forward such as accelerate the development of digital economy in peripheral cities, establish and improve the barrier-free sharing mechanism of regional digital infrastructure, and deepening the reform of regional digital factor market integration.
