Guitang 49 was selected from cross progeny of ROC22 ( female parent) × Ganzhe 14 ( male parent) at the Guangxi Sug￣arcane Research Institute, Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences. It was approved as a new variety by the Guangxi Crop Variety Approval Committee in June 2015. Multiple￣year and multiple￣location evaluations showed that Guitang 49 had the following good characteristics:high emergence rate;strong tillering ability with more millable, uniform, mid￣to large size, and solid stalks;easy defoliating leaves at maturity;resistance to lodging;good ratoon ability with high germination rate;early maturity;high sugar con￣tent;high and stable yield;non￣flowering;and wide adaptability. During 2013-2015, the average cane yield of Guitang 49 from re￣gional tests in Guangxi involving two plant crop years and one ratoon crop year was 104.29 t??hm-2 , which was 10.39% higher than the check variety ROC22. The average sucrose content was 14.80% during November to the next February, which was 0.56% higher than ROC22. The average sugar content was 15.43 t??hm-2 , 14.64% higher than ROC22. In 2014 Guangxi sugarcane production tri￣al, Guitang 49 produced 105.89 t??hm-2 , which were 10.18% higher than the control ROC22.
