The Spatial Layout of University Campuses and University-firm Collaborative Innovation——Empirical Evidences from National-level"Little Giant"
This study uses comprehensive data on university campuses and the micro-pa-tent data of more than 9,200 national-level"little giant"firms to quantitatively evaluate the effects of the spatial layout of university campuses on university-firm collaborative innova-tion.The study finds that the number of university campuses within 15 km of firms has a significant positive impact on the number of joint ownership of patents, breadth and depth of cooperation between universities and firms. The effects decrease with increasing distance. In addition, the presence of university campuses in the proximity of firm has also significant in-direct effects on the number of patents by firms without engaging universities.
