By investigating freshmen's understanding of the derivative concept at a normal university,we gained insights into their learning status.Analyzing the historical development and current teaching meth-ods of derivatives in high schools and universities,we found that both have strengths and areas needing im-provement.This paper proposes four suggestions to optimize teaching the derivative and related knowledge in high schools and universities.
