The levelling down objection is an important challenge for egalitarian theory.However,levelling down is not an inherent requirement of egalitarian theory.Even if egalitarians advocate achieving equality through levelling down,it is not without any benefits as Parfit and others imagined.When aiming at unfair inequality,levelling down is at least conducive to alleviating it.
