Sustainable Renewal of Post-Industrial Waterfront Landscapes:A Case Study on the Julong Bay Exhibition Center of Guangzhou Bai'etan within the Framework of the Sustainable Sites Initiative
The Sustainable Sites Initiative(SITES)aims to protect, enhance, and restore the benefits and services of healthy ecosystems. It is a globally recognized tool for assessing landscape sustainability.Waterfront post-industrial landscapes, notable for their significant geo-economic value, unique characteristics, and substantial impact, represent a critical area for applying and promoting sustainable design principles. This paper examines the first SITES platinum-certified post-industrial landscape project in mainland China, the Guangzhou Baigutan Jurong Bay Exhibition Center Landscape Project. It comprehensively analyses how the SITES guidelines influence waterfront post-industrial landscape projects during pre-design assessment, site design, construction, maintenance, and operation stages.Furthermore, the study emphasizes strategies that leverage on-site resources and assume a leadership role in adapting to the specific conditions of mainland China's projects.
