Efficacy of acupoint massage with herbal ointment combined with acupoint application in treating cold-damp ob-struction-type knee osteoarthritis
Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupoint massage with herbal ointment combined with acupoint application in the treatment of cold-damp obstruction-type knee osteoarthritis(KOA).Methods Ninety pa-tients with cold-damp obstruction-type KOA admitted to Wenzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital from January 2024 to June 2024 were randomly divided into three groups:control group A(acupoint massage with herbal ointment),control group B(Erwu ointment acupoint application),and observation group(combined treatment of acupoint massage and acupoint application),with 30 patients in each group.Pain scores, knee joint function scores,Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)syndrome scores, and inflammatory factor levels were observed before and after treatment. Results The total effective rate in the observation group was higher than that in control groups A and B.After treatment, the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index(WOMAC)scores,Visual Analogue Scale(VAS)scores, and TCM syndrome scores decreased in all groups, with a more significant reduction in the observation group compared to con-trol groups A and B.The Lysholm knee joint function scores increased, with a greater improvement in the observation group.Serum levels of nitric oxide(NO),tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α),and interleukin-1(IL-1)de-creased,with lower levels observed in the observation group compared to the control groups. These differences were sta-tistically significant(P<0.05).Conclusion The combined treatment of acupoint massage with herbal ointment and acupoint application significantly improves clinical symptoms in patients with cold-damp obstruction-type KOA.It effectively alleviates knee joint pain, enhances joint function, reduces inflammatory factors, and improves the overall qual-ity of life.
