A Survey and Analysis of the Sarnath-Styled Buddha Statues in Southeast Asia
Hinduism and Buddhism were developing in parallel in Southeast Asia around the 4th and the 5th centuries.Sarnath-styled Buddhist statues came out in vogue with the strong regional feature around the 6th and the 7th centuries,with the rock,bronze and wood figures as the representatives which appeared mainly in the lower Mekong Delta and the coastal areas of the Gulf of Thailand,few in Sumatra and other places.The developed maritime communication promoted the making of the regional styled Buddhist statues in Southeast Asia,which improved the exchanges of Buddhist art between China and India meanwhile.
