A Survey and Analysis into the Northern-Song Pianpusa Cliff-Niched Bodhisattva Sculptures in Nanxun,Anyue,Sichuan Province
Of the four Pianpusa cliff-niched Bodhisattva sculptures in Nanxun,Anyue County of Sichuan Province,No.2 Niche with one Thousand-Armed Avalokitesvara(Guanyin)and Sengjia was carved in the 6th year of the Dazhong Xiangfu(1013 AD)of the Northern-Song Dynasty,which stands for the belief of the Avalokitesvara protecting all beings with one thousand hands and saving them from suffering with incarnated figures.The assembled-shaped sculpture is unprecedented and the figure of Sangha is the only model ever found of the Northern-Song Dynasty.No.3 Niche housing the images of a clan of five generations as donors of the deities was engraved by a patron surnamed Cao in the 2nd year of the Xining(1069 AD)of the Northern-Song Dynasty,who expected to fulfill the wishes of his deceased ancestors,which represents the people's philosophy of filial piety and family in a high priority in the Song Dynasty.It remains as the early Buddha sculptures made by Stonemason Wen family of the eastern Sichuan.
