A Textual Research on'Zhong'(中)As a Container Used in the Ritual of Archery in the Han-Dynasty
Among the large number of the Han-Dynasty base-holders for implements, some have double holes, which are different in shape and assemblage from the single-holed ones. This thesis starts with the contexts where the kind of objects are excavated, relevant documentary and images to identify the double-hole object as'Zhong'(中)used in the archery ceremony of the Han Dynasty, that is,a kind of beast-shaped container for holding counting chips in the archery ceremony in ancient times of China.Yet,the'Zhong'(中)unearthed from the Han Dynasty is different from the records in the ritual books, mainly in terms of material, number of holes and shape. There remains no physical objects of the'Zhong'in the pre-Qin period, which deserves further exploration.
