A Textual Research of Qianlong Reign's'Buddha Amitayus in Kesi Tapestry'in Hanging Scroll on the Sources and Function of Images
The Palace Museum and many other cultural and museum institutions around the world have collected a group of artistic works titled'Buddha Amitayus in Kesi Tapestry'(《缂丝无量寿尊佛》)scrolls that are closely related in iconography. This article traces the image sources and functions by historical documents and Qing palace archives. It confirms that the images are composed of complicated and simplified versions. The simplified version is directly based on the Qing Court collected image of'Amitayus Buddha'with the signature of Painter Lu Lengjia(Tang Dynasty,act.ca.730-760),whereas the complicated version was specially created for the construction of Puning Temple after the Dzungars was pacified in the 19th year of Qianlong's reign(1754).They bear precious witness to the historical process of Xinjiang entering the national unification.
